Brighton & Hove Albion FC v Arsenal FC

Arsenal FC face their next challenging fixture in the Premier League. The Gunners are away to Brighton & Hove Albion at the American Express Stadium. Arsenal travel to the south coast of England with twelve points from their first four league matches and are looking to continue their winning run.

Brighton, however, are likely to prove a tricky opponent. The Seagulls caused a stir last matchday with a resounding 5–0 away win against Coventry City. This underlined their attacking quality and they go into the clash brimming with confidence.

Arsenal’s most recent victory came with a 2–0 win away at AFC Sunderland. Bruno Guimarães put the Gunners ahead before Bukayo Saka sealed the victory with a penalty in stoppage time. They also made a successful start to their Champions League campaign with a 1–0 win over SSC Napoli.

From a tactical perspective, the clash between Brighton’s high-pressing game and Arsenal’s controlled build-up play could prove decisive. Whilst the hosts will look to apply early pressure and switch play quickly, Arsenal will aim to take control through prolonged periods of possession.

In terms of squad selection, Mikel Arteta faces a few defensive headaches. William Saliba is out, whilst Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera remain doubtful. Brighton, for their part, will be without Kaoru Mitoma, Yankuba Minteh and Stefanos Tzimas, amongst others.

Up front, Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz are likely to play key roles for Arsenal once again. Saka, in particular, can pose a threat with his pace and strength in one-on-one situations.

For Arsenal, the aim is to build on their successful start to the season and pick up more vital points in the title race. However, Brighton have already shown that they can be dangerous going forward at any time. Consequently, an intense and open Premier League match is likely to unfold at the American Express Stadium.

Squad, manager and 2026/27 season targets

Arsenal FC head into the 2026/27 season as reigning English champions. Under manager Mikel Arteta, who has been in charge since December 2019, the Gunners won the Premier League in the 2025/26 season for the first time in 22 years. The club also reached the Champions League final, though they were eventually defeated by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. Expectations for the new season are correspondingly high: the club aims to defend its league title whilst also competing for the Champions League trophy once again.

Arteta can draw on an exceptionally deep squad. In goal, David Raya, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Illan Meslier are all part of the squad. The defence is versatile, with players such as William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães, Jurrien Timber, Ben White, Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapié, Cristhian Mosquera and Ezri Konsa covering both central and full-back positions. Konsa and Hincapié in particular give Arteta greater scope to switch between different back fours and back threes.

Midfield remains one of the team’s greatest strengths. Declan Rice plays a central role linking defence and attack, whilst captain Martin Ødegaard is primarily responsible for creativity and playmaking. A new addition is Bruno Guimarães, who was signed from Newcastle United in the summer for around 75 million pounds. Other options include Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, amongst others. Arsenal therefore have numerous options for central and defensive midfield.

In attack, Bukayo Saka remains one of the team’s key players. He is joined by, amongst others, Viktor Gyökeres, Kai Havertz, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Christos Tzolis. In particular, the combination of pacy wingers, technically gifted attacking midfielders and several options in the centre of the attack is intended to make Arsenal more versatile and harder to read. Tzolis joined from Club Brugge in the summer, whilst the squad was simultaneously reduced in size by several departures. Amongst others, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard left the club, whilst Ethan Nwaneri was sent out on loan.

The club’s own youth academy could also play an interesting role once again. Max Dowman is regarded as one of the greatest talents in Arsenal’s youth ranks. The attacking midfielder already set several age-group records last season and is likely to be given further opportunities in the 2026/27 season. Myles Lewis-Skelly also remains part of the extended squad and, due to his age, can be fielded in addition to the regular Premier League squad list.

The team continues to be led by Martin Ødegaard. The Norwegian has worn the captain’s armband since the 2022/23 season and led Arsenal to the Premier League title in the 2025/26 season. This makes him only the third Arsenal captain, after Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira, to lead the club to the title in the Premier League era.

The sporting objectives for 2026/27 thus stem largely from the successes of the previous season. In the Premier League, Arsenal, as defending champions, are once again among the teams vying for the title. At the same time, the aim is to take the next step at European level. Following the narrow defeat in the 2026 Champions League final, another deep run in Europe’s premier competition is one of the key challenges of the season. In the group stage, Arsenal will face, amongst others, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and SSC Napoli.

Arteta will likely also look to capitalise on the greater squad depth in the domestic cup competitions. For the 2026/27 season, Arsenal have a squad with multiple high-calibre options in almost every position. Having returned to the top of English football, the aim is therefore no longer simply to keep pace with Manchester City, Liverpool and the other top clubs. The challenge now is to build on last season’s success and establish themselves permanently at the top, both in England and in Europe.
